Where do I go for more information?

We will be posting information on our website as it becomes available. Please check back often for the latest updates.

Why is Unified Communities Federal Credit Union merging with Genisys Credit Union?

The credit union and financial industry is becoming increasingly competitive and consolidated. The partnership with Genisys is a proactive step that allows our two institutions to capitalize on their strengths, and position us to meet the current and future needs of all members.

How will the Unified Communities combination with Genisys affect my service?

Members will retain the high-quality services they have now, plus enjoy expanded branch locations in southeast Michigan, access to a full-service Contact Center, enhanced online and mobile access (including mobile deposit, card controls, and mobile bill pay), Debit Rewards, additional products, services and convenience, and uninterrupted membership.

Is my money safe?

Yes. Your funds continue to be federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration.

I have a lot of money on deposit. Will the level of deposit insurance change in any way?

No. Your deposit accounts will continue to be insured up to $250,000 by The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund. It is important to note that the financial stability of an organization goes beyond share insurance. Genisys Credit Union maintains a high net worth ratio and has consistently received the highest rating possible from Bauer Financial, Inc. (Five Stars). BauerFinancial is an independent organization that classifies all credit unions and banks based on a number of factors, including profitability, investment portfolio, capital, loan delinquencies, and historical trends and reserves. Genisys has received Bauer Financial's prestigious Sustained Superiority Award for achieving 5-Star status for over 80 consecutive quarters. This makes a strong statement about the safety and financial soundness of the credit union going forward.

What is the advantage of being bigger?

Combining the best of both organizations means a credit union with expanded products and services, more financial assets, combined technology, enhanced personnel skills, and expanded diversification of membership. All of these things combined, make for a stronger credit union and will provide for an enhanced member experience.

Some of the benefits that you will receive from your new credit union include:

  • A larger branch network. Genisys currently has 28 branches in southeast Michigan, including a new branch in Van Buren Township/Belleville, featuring a drive-up ATM and drive-thru.
  • Expanded access to your accounts through the Genisys full-service Contact Center, where you call, e-mail or chat with us, rather than visiting a branch.
  • The latest in mobile and online banking technology, including remote deposit, card controls, and bill payment through your smartphone or computer
  • Available credit through the Genisys consumer loan and mortgage departments
  • Valuable financial guidance and service through Genisys Investment Services
  • Debit Rewards on all of your signature-based debit card transactions
  • Genius High-Yield Checking
  • Improved deposit and loan rates
  • Business banking solutions

Is the decision to merge final?

Almost. Following lengthy and deliberate fact-finding and due diligence, the partnership was unanimously approved by the Board of Directors from each Credit Union. On April 20, 2022 a positive member vote was validated. The merger will be official on June 1, 2022.

Will there be layoffs or job loss?

No job loss or layoffs are planned or anticipated. Employees will also retain their current compensation, seniority, and receive very competitive benefits.

Are you going to close my Branch?

There are no plans to close branches. Providing quality, convenient services that members use is Genisys' number one priority.

When will I be able to start using Genisys Credit Union's or shared branches?

Shared branches will still be available with no changes, moving forward. It will be necessary to convert Unified Communities to the same data processing system before members can begin using all Genisys branches. This is planned to be completed on July 1, 2022 and more information will be shared with you as that event nears.

How will I be notified if there are any changes to my account?

Members will continue to receive updates via mail, newsletters, statements, Web sites, email, and lobby brochures. Please be sure to read all material sent to you from your credit union.

When will I start to notice a change?

Depending on the timeline for regulatory approval, Unified Communities members may begin to see operations combine slowly over a period of several months, beginning in late first quarter 2022. Members will be kept informed of changes and new opportunities as they become available.

Since we will be significantly larger, will we operate like a bank?

No. We will stay a nonprofit, member-owned financial cooperative and serve members in the traditional credit union manner, including community-based service. Genisys Credit Union has been voted Best Credit Union by the readers of several local news outlets, including the Oakland Press, the Macomb Daily, the Clarkston News and others for several years in a row. Genisys employees have voted Genisys a Detroit Free Press Top Workplace several years in a row and Genisys is known for their commitment to the communities they operate in and high member satisfaction. This will continue and the members and communities served by Unified Communities Federal Credit Union will benefit.
